Japan Ski Resort Opening Dates 2026–2027

Japan Ski Season 2026–2027
When Will Japan’s Major Ski Resorts Open?

Several major Japanese ski resorts have announced their planned 2026–27 operating dates. Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu and Nozawa Onsen are targeting late November, while Shiga Kogen’s common lift-ticket season begins in early December. Hakuba Valley has confirmed a December start, but individual resort dates are still subject to announcement and snow conditions.

Information checked: October 2, 2026
Quick answer The earliest confirmed date among the major natural-snow resorts in this guide is November 28, 2026. Niseko United, Furano, Rusutsu and Nozawa Onsen are all planning operations from that date. However, a scheduled opening date does not guarantee that every lift or course will be available. Travelers seeking a full ski experience should generally avoid building an inflexible trip around opening weekend.
November 28, 2026 Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu and Nozawa Onsen currently list this opening date.
December 2026 Hakuba Valley currently describes its 2026–27 season as starting in December.
December 5, 2026 Start of the Shiga Kogen all-area common lift-ticket operating period.

All dates on this page refer to scheduled or officially published operating periods. Snowfall, weather, lift inspections and course preparation can delay opening or reduce the available terrain. Always check the resort’s live operation report shortly before travel.

This table is based on official resort information available on October 2, 2026. “Officially published” means the resort currently displays the period as its 2026–27 season. “Tentative” or “scheduled” means the resort itself has announced the date but still identifies it as provisional.

What Does a Ski Resort Opening Date Mean?

A resort can officially open with only part of the mountain available. Early operations may use one lift, a limited number of courses or terrain with artificial snow. The entire resort does not necessarily open on the first day.

Scheduled opening date The first day the resort intends to operate, provided that snow, weather and safety conditions allow.
Full-season conditions The period when more lifts, connecting courses, lessons, restaurants and other resort services are normally operating.
Do not treat November 28 as a snow guarantee. Natural snowfall can vary significantly each year. If skiing is the main purpose of your international trip, late December through February generally gives you more protection against limited early-season terrain.

Major Japan Ski Resorts: 2026–27 Details

Official dates published

Niseko United

Opening: November 28, 2026 Hokkaido Four ski areas

Niseko United lists November 28, 2026 as the opening date for Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono. Annupuri and Grand Hirafu are scheduled through May 5, 2027, while Niseko Village and Hanazono have earlier April closing dates.

Night skiing is currently scheduled from December 12, 2026 to March 22, 2027. Early-season visitors should check which connecting lifts and upper-mountain routes are operating rather than assuming that all four areas are fully linked.

Check the official Niseko United operating dates. For hotels, transfers and itinerary planning, read the Niseko Ski Trip Guide.

Official tentative date

Furano Ski Resort

Opening: November 28, 2026 Hokkaido Date marked tentative

Furano’s official Prince Snow Resorts page currently lists November 28, 2026 as its scheduled opening date and identifies it as tentative. Furano has different mountain zones, and their operating periods may not be identical.

Travelers visiting in late November or early December should confirm which lifts and courses will actually be open. A resort-level opening announcement does not necessarily mean both major zones will be fully operating.

Check the official Furano Ski Resort page.

Official scheduled date

Rusutsu Resort

Opening: November 28, 2026 Hokkaido Early season conditions may vary

Rusutsu’s official lift-ticket information schedules its first early-season period from November 28 to December 11, 2026. A second early-season period runs from December 12 to 18, followed by the main winter period.

This pricing structure is useful evidence that Rusutsu expects to operate from late November, but available terrain will still depend on snowfall and daily conditions.

Check the official Rusutsu winter lift-ticket information.

Official dates published

Nozawa Onsen

Opening: November 28, 2026 Closing: May 5, 2027 Nagano

Nozawa Onsen’s official ticket information lists its 2026–27 season from November 28, 2026 to May 5, 2027. The discounted “Season’s First Ride” period runs through December 18.

Nozawa is particularly attractive for travelers who want skiing combined with a traditional hot-spring village. However, opening-week operations can still be limited by natural snowfall.

Check official Nozawa Onsen ticket dates. For the full destination plan, read the Nozawa Onsen Ski Trip Guide.

Individual dates pending

Hakuba Valley

Expected start: December 2026 Nagano Ten ski areas

Hakuba Valley’s official season-pass information currently states that the pass will be valid from the scheduled resort openings in December 2026 until approximately early May 2027.

Hakuba is a valley containing multiple independent ski areas, so there is no single opening date that guarantees every resort will operate. Happo-one, Hakuba 47, Goryu, Tsugaike and the other areas may announce separate dates and may open different amounts of terrain.

Check the official Hakuba Valley season information. Use the Hakuba Ski Trip Guide to compare accommodation areas, access and itinerary options.

Common-ticket period published

Shiga Kogen

Common season: December 5, 2026 Closing: May 5, 2027 18 ski areas

Shiga Kogen’s official information lists December 5, 2026 to May 5, 2027 as the operating period for its common lift-ticket season. Individual areas may operate on different dates, depending on snow and local conditions.

Yakebitaiyama separately lists a tentative operating period beginning December 4, 2026. Travelers should still check individual-area status because Shiga Kogen covers a very large mountain region.

Check official Shiga Kogen ticket information. For resort areas, hotels and Snow Monkey Park combinations, read the Shiga Kogen Ski Trip Guide.

Should You Book a Japan Ski Trip for Opening Week?

Opening week can suit flexible travelers who accept limited terrain and are happy to combine skiing with onsen, food or sightseeing. It is less suitable when skiing is the main purpose of a long-haul trip or when beginners need guaranteed lesson areas.

Opening week may work if Your dates are flexible, your booking can be changed, you are comfortable with limited courses, and you have worthwhile non-ski alternatives.
Choose later dates if You need children’s lessons, full beginner terrain, night skiing, multiple connected areas or the best chance of a complete resort experience.
  • Check the live lift and course report—not only the advertised opening date.
  • Confirm when your preferred ski school begins regular lessons.
  • Check whether rental shops, resort restaurants and local buses are operating on their full winter schedules.
  • Use cancellable or changeable arrangements where practical.
  • Prepare an onsen, city, food or sightseeing alternative for poor conditions.
  • Do not book a non-refundable transfer around an unconfirmed resort opening without understanding the risk.

When Should You Travel for the 2026–27 Ski Season?

The opening date is only one part of choosing a Japan ski trip. Your best period also depends on snow priorities, crowd tolerance, children’s ages, lesson requirements, airport route and the cities you want to add.

Travel period Main advantage Main risk Best suited to
Late November–early December Quieter dates and possible early-season prices Limited snow, terrain and services Flexible repeat visitors
Mid to late December More terrain and services usually begin operating Holiday crowds and higher prices Travelers tied to December dates
January–February Strongest general powder and winter conditions High demand for hotels, lessons and transfers Powder trips and first-time ski holidays
March Longer daylight and potentially easier family conditions Warmer snow and variable lower slopes Families, beginners and mixed groups
April–early May Spring skiing at selected high or northern resorts Limited resort choice and reduced terrain Flexible spring travelers
