Launched on October 1, 2026, Supreme Class sits above the Green Car and introduces private, electronically locked cabins on selected Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Hakata.
Supreme Class is not available on every Shinkansen. It operates only on selected Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama trains, and each participating train currently has only two Supreme Class cabins.
What Is Shinkansen Supreme Class?
Supreme Class is a premium travel category introduced by JR Central and JR West on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. It provides a higher level of privacy and personal control than an ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat.
The first phase consists of fully enclosed Supreme Class Cabins. Each cabin has an electronic-lock door, a large reclining seat, individually adjustable lighting and airflow, a dedicated Wi-Fi connection and space for working or dining.
This is different from JR East’s GranClass, which operates on selected Shinkansen routes in eastern and northern Japan. Supreme Class is a separate JR Central and JR West product serving the Tokyo–Nagoya–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima–Hakata corridor.
Supreme Class Car 7 vs Car 10
Car 7 Supreme Class Cabin
The larger Car 7 cabin may be used by one or two travelers. It includes one main reclining seat and a separate sofa with cushions.
- Suitable for one traveler or a couple
- Private electronic-lock door
- Main reclining seat
- Additional sofa
- Large table
- Cabin-controlled lighting and airflow
Booking the cabin does not automatically include the second passenger’s train fare. The accompanying passenger needs a separate valid ticket for the same train.
Car 10 Supreme Class Cabin
The Car 10 cabin is designed for one traveler seeking privacy for work, rest or a quiet journey between major cities.
- Designed for one passenger
- Private electronic-lock door
- Large reclining seat
- Personal luggage space
- Large table
- Cabin-controlled lighting, sound and airflow
This is generally the more practical option for solo business travelers or visitors who want a private train journey without paying for the larger Car 7 cabin.
The main seats inside the current cabins cannot be rotated. This differs from the separate Supreme Class Seat planned for fiscal year 2027.
What Is Included in a Supreme Class Cabin?
Welcome Service
Supreme Class guests on eligible Nozomi and Hikari services receive a complimentary beverage and confection once per journey. The service may be unavailable depending on the train, operating conditions or journey section.
Selected food and drink products are also available for purchase through the onboard Mobile Order Service. These purchases are separate from the cabin fare.
Shinkansen Supreme Class Prices
The following are JR Central’s published adult one-way fares for Nozomi services during a regular travel season. They include the basic fare and limited-express fare.
| Route | Car 7 Cabin Up to two guests |
Car 10 Cabin One guest |

| Tokyo–Hiroshima | ¥86,620 | ¥60,020 |
| Shin-Osaka–Hakata | ¥72,690 | ¥50,090 |
Regular-season prices change by ¥200 or ¥400 depending on whether the boarding date falls in an off-peak, peak or super-peak period. Hikari and Kodama prices may also differ from Nozomi prices.
Which Shinkansen Trains Have Supreme Class?
Supreme Class operates on selected trains between Tokyo and Hakata on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. Eligible services can include:
- Nozomi;
- Hikari;
- Kodama.
Not every departure uses a train equipped with Supreme Class. Train assignments may also change because of inspections, severe weather, delays or other operating conditions.
Search for Supreme Class in Smart EX for the actual boarding date. JR Central also publishes a daily operating schedule, but some trains may be confirmed only on the day of travel.

Register the boarding method

Use the same credential at the cabin
After entering the train, use the registered IC card or QR Ticket to unlock the electronic cabin door.
Standard sales normally begin at 10:00 a.m. Japan time one month before the boarding date. Supreme Class is not included in Smart EX’s one-year advance reservation option.
How Does the Two-Person Supreme Class Cabin Work?
The wording “for up to two guests” can be confusing. Smart EX allows only one person to be included in the Supreme Class cabin reservation itself.
When two adults use the Car 7 cabin:
- One traveler reserves the Car 7 Supreme Class cabin.
- The accompanying traveler buys a separate valid ticket for the same train and section.
- The second ticket may be for an ordinary non-reserved seat, ordinary reserved seat or Green Car.
- Both travelers use the private Car 7 cabin during the reserved journey.
A child aged six or younger may not need an additional train ticket under the stated cabin rule, but child-ticket conditions can depend on the wider journey and seating arrangement. Confirm the exact requirement before travel.
Is Shinkansen Supreme Class Worth It?
- want complete privacy between major cities;
- need a quiet space for confidential work;
- are planning a special honeymoon or anniversary journey;
- prefer controlled lighting, airflow and sound;
- want to avoid sitting in an open railway carriage;
- value the experience more than the lowest fare.
- mainly want a comfortable seat;
- are trying to control transportation costs;
- need several seats for a larger family or group;
- want more departure-time flexibility;
- prefer booking at a station;
- do not want to depend on Smart EX and digital boarding.
Supreme Class is best treated as a limited premium experience, not the default way to travel around Japan. For many visitors, a Green Car or ordinary reserved seat still provides enough space and comfort at a substantially lower cost.
