Is Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium worth visiting?

For most first-time visitors to Okinawa, yes—especially if you are interested in marine life, travelling with children or already planning to explore northern Okinawa.

The main attraction is the Kuroshio Sea tank, where whale sharks, manta rays and other large migratory fish can be viewed through a window measuring approximately 8.2 metres high and 22.5 metres wide. The route also moves through shallow-water, coral-reef and deep-sea environments, giving the visit more variety than a single headline exhibit.

The main drawback is distance. A short visit squeezed between other Naha activities can feel rushed. The aquarium works best as the anchor for a northern Okinawa day rather than as a quick stop.

Tickets can be purchased at the aquarium, while web-ticket options may also be available. Keep the ticket after entering because same-day re-entry is permitted when you present it at the entrance.

Opening hours in 2026

The aquarium’s standard published hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with last admission at 5:30 p.m. Extended hours apply during specified peak periods.

The aquarium currently states that no scheduled closure is planned through March 31, 2027. Temporary closure remains possible because of typhoons, severe weather, animal care or equipment conditions.

2026 summer evening option

From July 18 through August 31, 2026, the aquarium is running a seasonal night-aquarium programme. In August, visitors can remain until 9:00 p.m., with final admission at 8:00 p.m.

A web-exclusive evening discount is available for entry from 5:00 p.m. during the advertised period. The discounted ticket must be purchased online by the previous day and is not sold at the aquarium ticket counter.

Evening entry may suit travellers staying in northern Okinawa, but it is less convenient for a same-day public-transport return to Naha. Confirm the final bus before choosing a late visit.

Best time to visit

Best overall choice: arrive at opening

Arriving shortly before 8:30 a.m. gives you the greatest control over the day. You can see the main aquarium before the busiest middle part of the day, then continue to the dolphin area or other parts of Ocean Expo Park.

Good alternative: late afternoon

Late afternoon can work during extended opening periods, particularly if you have a rental car or are staying near Motobu. Check the closing time of outdoor facilities separately because they may close earlier than the main aquarium.

Deep Sea

The lower section recreates Okinawa’s deep-water environment and includes creatures associated with depths of approximately 200 to 700 metres. This area is easy to rush, so reserve some time after the main tank.

Ocean Blue café

Ocean Blue provides views of the Kuroshio Sea tank. A limited number of aquarium-side seats are offered separately for 50-minute use, while ordinary free seating is also available. Availability should not be treated as guaranteed.

Dolphin show and outdoor attractions

The dolphin show takes place at Okichan Theater outside the paid aquarium. Admission to the show is free, and the performance lasts approximately 20 minutes. The theater is about a five-minute walk from the aquarium exit.

The currently published show times are: 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Schedules can change because of weather, animal welfare or operational requirements.

How to get to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

By rental car

From Naha Airport, the official estimate is approximately two hours when using the expressway. Real travel time can be longer because of congestion, rest stops or busy parking periods.

Use the Ocean Expo Park parking areas. Because the park is large, check which parking area is most convenient for the aquarium instead of choosing the first available entrance.

By express bus

Direct and express-bus services connect the Naha area or airport with northern Okinawa. The official approximate journey from Naha Airport is two and a half hours, although schedules and travel time vary by operator.
